How do we know the repair worked?

Because we test it in front of you under the conditions you complained about. For a floor that means walking the repaired area under real weight. For an upstairs floor it means someone walking above while you listen from the room below, since that is the only test that actually matters. We do not consider a job finished until the person who noticed the noise agrees it is gone.
