Squeaky stairs repair

Squeaky Floor tracks down and fixes squeaky stairs: the loose tread, riser or wedge that is actually moving, refastened at the joint rather than patched over.

A staircase carries more concentrated, repeated load than any floor in the house, which is why stair squeaks usually appear first.

Why stairs squeak before floors do

A staircase is the hardest-working assembly in a house. Every trip between floors puts a concentrated load on a small number of joints, and unlike a floor there is nowhere for that load to spread out. A traditional wood staircase is built from treads and risers fitted into notched stringers and held with glue blocks and wedges driven in from behind. Over time the glue fails, the wedges dry out and back off, and the tread starts to move a fraction of a millimetre against the riser or the stringer every time somebody steps on it. That movement is the squeak. Because the components are wood, the same seasonal shrinkage that loosens a subfloor fastener also shrinks the wedges holding a stair together, which is why stair noise usually gets worse once the heating season starts. The good news is that a staircase is a repairable assembly. In almost every case the fix is refastening or re-wedging the specific joint that has moved, not rebuilding the stairs.

Where a stair squeak actually comes from

Almost every staircase we are called to traces back to one of these.

Loose tread

The horizontal board you step on has separated slightly from the riser or the stringer beneath it.

Failed glue blocks

The small triangular blocks glued into the tread and riser joint have let go, usually from age and drying.

Backed-out wedges

The tapered wedges driven in behind the stringer have shrunk and loosened, letting the tread float.

Nails working against wood

Fasteners that have worn their own hole and no longer hold the joint tight.

A moving stringer

Less common, but where the stringer itself has pulled away from the wall or the framing, the whole flight moves.

How we repair squeaky stairs

Find the moving joint

We load each tread and riser individually to identify exactly which joint is producing the noise before touching anything.

Refasten or re-wedge

From behind where the underside is open, or discreetly from the face where it is not, depending on access and finish.

Test the full flight

We walk every step again afterwards, because fixing one tread sometimes reveals a second that was masked by the first.

Our Process

From your call to a quiet staircase

1

Tell us which steps

Which treads squeak, and whether it is going up, coming down, or both.

2

We ask about access

Whether the underside of the stairs is open, finished, or in a closet, because that changes the approach.

3

Written quote by tread count

Priced against the number of treads that actually need work, confirmed before we start.

4

Repaired and walked through

We fix the joints, test the full flight, and show you what was moving.

What homeowners tell us

Our laminate flooring had lifted near the kitchen after a small water leak. They replaced the affected sections and repaired the surrounding area. The finished repair looks clean and matches the rest of the flooring very well.

Squeaky stairs repair questions

Can squeaky stairs be fixed without replacing the staircase?

In the large majority of cases, yes. A staircase is an assembly of treads, risers, stringers, wedges and glue blocks, and a squeak means one of those components has loosened rather than failed. Refastening or re-wedging the specific joint that is moving is a targeted repair. We would only raise a rebuild if we found the stringer itself was compromised, which is uncommon.

Do you have to work from underneath the stairs?

It is the cleaner option when the underside is accessible, because we can re-wedge and reblock the joints without touching the visible face of the stairs. Where the underside is finished, in a closet, or otherwise closed in, we work discreetly from the face instead. We will tell you which applies before quoting.

Why are our stairs noisier in winter?

The wedges and blocks holding a staircase together are wood, and wood shrinks as indoor air dries out during the heating season. A wedge that was tight in August can be marginally loose in January, which lets the tread move. It is the same mechanism that makes floors squeak more in winter, concentrated into a smaller assembly.

How many treads usually need work?

Fewer than people expect. Most calls come down to two or three specific steps rather than the whole flight, which is why we price by tread count rather than as a flat staircase job. We check every step so we do not leave you with a second squeak a week later, but we only charge for what actually needed doing.

Is a squeaky stair a safety problem?

A squeak on its own is a noise, not a hazard. What is worth taking seriously is a tread that feels soft, springy or that moves noticeably underfoot, or a handrail or baluster that has come loose. Those are worth looking at promptly. If we find any of that during a squeak visit we will tell you.
