It affects how easy the job is. Squeaks are loudest between roughly November and April, when dry indoor heating air has shrunk the wood and opened up the movement, so that is when a noise is most reliably reproducible and therefore easiest to locate. A squeak we cannot hear is a squeak we are guessing at, so winter visits tend to be more productive.
